Real-Ear Measurements: The Gold Standard
Real-ear measurement (also called probe microphone verification) is considered the gold standard in hearing aid fitting. A tiny microphone is placed in your ear canal alongside your hearing aid to measure exactly what sound your ear is receiving.
This process ensures your hearing aids are delivering the precise amplification your ears need — not just a "best guess" based on software. Research shows that hearing aids verified with real-ear measurements provide significantly better speech understanding.
Only about 30% of hearing aid providers perform real-ear measurements. At ACI Hearing Center, we do it on every single fitting. It is part of our commitment to best practices and your best hearing outcome.
See our full real-ear measurement page for the 6-step process, pediatric and cochlear-implant use cases, and how to check whether your current hearing aids were verified this way.
Before we fit a hearing aid, we also measure how well you understand speech in noise using validated tests like QuickSIN. Your SNR loss score tells us exactly how much noise management your hearing aid needs, and how to set the directional microphone and noise reduction features. Hearing aid brand comparison
We do not push a single brand. The right brand depends on your hearing loss shape, your ear anatomy, and how you spend your day. Here is a quick side-by-side of the eight brands we fit at ACI Hearing Center.
All eight brands are fit with real-ear measurements at our Lafayette office. Cochlear implant candidates are evaluated separately.
Which brand is right for you?
Phonak Audeo Sphere Infinio and Oticon Real both have strong power BTE options for severe to profound loss. For very high-gain fits we typically start with Phonak Naida or Oticon Xceed, which we can special-order. The right answer depends on your audiogram shape and daily listening needs, so we recommend booking an evaluation.
ReSound Nexia leads on universal streaming because it supports Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast, which are the new standards for public streaming in venues and airports. Phonak Audeo Sphere Infinio has excellent hands-free calls on both iPhone and Android. Oticon Real and Starkey Genesis AI also stream to iPhone and Android with steady performance.
Lyric by Phonak is the only extended-wear option in our lineup. It sits deep in your ear canal and stays in for months at a time, so there is no daily handling, no charging, and no removing it for the shower. ACI is one of the few Lyric-certified offices in Acadiana. Not everyone is a candidate, so we do a candidacy evaluation first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most hearing aids last 3 to 7 years with proper care and maintenance. Technology advances may also prompt an upgrade to take advantage of new features and improved sound quality.
No. Modern hearing aids are programmed to amplify the specific frequencies where you have hearing loss. They do not just make everything louder — they make sounds clearer and more natural. Real-ear measurements help us fine-tune this precisely.
Hearing aid prices vary depending on the technology level and features you need. We offer a range of options at different price points and will work with you to find a solution within your budget. Many insurance plans cover part of the cost, and we can help verify your benefits.
If you have hearing loss in both ears, two hearing aids are generally recommended. Binaural (two-ear) hearing provides better sound localization, improved speech understanding in noise, and a more balanced listening experience.
Keep your hearing aids clean and dry. Wipe them daily with a soft cloth, store them in a dry place overnight, and bring them in for regular professional cleanings. We will teach you proper care when you receive your devices.
