Questions Lafayette Families Ask About Our Audiologists

Real answers about who we are, how we train, and what you can expect when you walk into ACI Hearing Center. If you do not see your question, call us at 337-223-9448.

What is a Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) and how is that different from a hearing aid dispenser?

A Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) holds a four-year clinical doctorate plus a year of supervised residency, on top of a bachelor's degree. That is eight to nine years of training focused on hearing and the medical care of the ear. A hearing aid dispenser, by contrast, may only need a high school diploma and a state license to sell hearing aids. All four ACI providers are doctoral-level audiologists, which means we can diagnose medical conditions of the ear, manage complex hearing loss, fit and program hearing aids, evaluate for cochlear implants, and coordinate ear-related medical care with ENT surgeons. We are not a retail hearing aid store.

How long have ACI's audiologists been practicing in Lafayette?

ACI Hearing Center was founded in 1984, which makes us one of the longest-standing audiology practices in Lafayette and across Acadiana. Dr. Kimberly Allred owns the practice and has cared for patients in Lafayette Parish for over two decades. Our team's combined audiology experience adds up to more than 70 years. When you come to ACI, you get continuity. The audiologist who fits your hearing aid is the same one who programs it next year and the year after that.

Where did the ACI audiologists train?

Our team trained at the strongest audiology programs in Louisiana and the southeast. Dr. Kimberly Allred earned her Au.D. from the University of Florida. Dr. Elizabeth LeMaire and Dr. Courtney Barbier both completed their doctorates through the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and LSU Health Sciences Center. Dr. Sarah Lalande-Davies trained at LSU and LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans. Every provider continues to pursue ongoing education in cochlear implants, tinnitus management, pediatric audiology, and new hearing aid technology.

Can I see the same audiologist every visit?

Yes, and we encourage it. We schedule you with the same audiologist for your follow-up appointments whenever possible. Continuity is a huge part of the ACI difference. Your audiologist learns your hearing patterns, your lifestyle, and the small adjustments that work best for you. If your primary audiologist is out, any of our other doctors can pull up your record and help you the same day.

Do the ACI audiologists treat children, or only adults?

We see patients of all ages, from infants through seniors. Pediatric hearing evaluations, school-age hearing screenings, hearing aid fittings for kids, and coordination with pediatricians and speech-language pathologists are all part of what we do. For complex pediatric cases that require a multi-disciplinary team or specialized pediatric ENT, we coordinate care with regional children's hospitals so the family does not have to manage the handoff themselves.

What conditions do ACI audiologists handle beyond hearing loss?

Tinnitus management (including FDA-approved Lenire treatment), cochlear implant evaluations and programming, cerumen (earwax) removal, custom hearing protection for musicians and shooters, single-sided deafness, hyperacusis, auditory processing disorders, and central auditory processing testing. If your ear or hearing issue requires medical care beyond audiology, we coordinate with an ENT surgeon. If it is hearing-loss-related, we handle the full pathway.

Are ACI audiologists accepting new patients?

Yes. We see new patients across all four providers and we schedule new hearing evaluations within one to two weeks. If you have a sudden change in hearing, sudden one-sided hearing loss, or sudden severe tinnitus, call us right away at 337-223-9448 and we will work you in as soon as possible. New-patient appointments include a full case history, otoscopic exam, audiometric testing, and an honest plain-English conversation about what we found.

What should I bring to my first appointment at ACI?

Bring your insurance card, photo ID, a list of medications, and any prior hearing test reports if you have them. If you have a current hearing aid you would like checked or reprogrammed, bring it along with the charger or batteries. If a family member is part of your hearing decisions, please bring them. Hearing affects relationships, and the people closest to you often hear things you do not (and vice versa) — they make great helpers during the evaluation.
