ReSound Nexia: a Lafayette audiologist review

The short version

ReSound Nexia is one of our top-shelf flagship recommendations at ACI Hearing Center. For patients who want future-ready wireless connectivity and natural spatial hearing, Nexia is often the best of the current-generation platforms.

Where Nexia wins in our fittings:

• Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast (first hearing aid platform in market with both) for future connectivity in airports, gyms, houses of worship, and public venues
• All Access Directionality for natural 360-degree spatial awareness (drivers, active older patients, walkers, hunters)
• Long rechargeable battery life (about 24 hrs typical, 12 hrs with heavy streaming)
• Made for iPhone direct streaming with native iOS integration
• Comfort and cosmetics for patients who want a small, discreet housing

Where Nexia is not the best pick:

• Restaurant and family-gathering background noise as the top priority, where Oticon Real handles that specific environment better in our side-by-side fittings
• Cognitively-loaded quiet listening (therapy, courtroom, one-on-one meetings), where Phonak Audeo Sphere Infinio holds speech clarity more consistently
• Roger microphone users (Roger is a Phonak-only ecosystem and does not work with Nexia)

There is no single best hearing aid. There is the best hearing aid for you. That decision comes out of the fitting appointment and the 60-day trial, not a spec sheet comparison.

Under the hood: Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast

ReSound Nexia launched in 2023 as the first hearing aid platform in the market to support Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast at launch. That may sound like a wireless-standard footnote, but it is one of the more important consumer audio developments in a decade for hearing aid patients.

Bluetooth LE Audio is the next-generation Bluetooth audio standard. It uses less power than Bluetooth Classic (longer streaming battery life), supports higher audio quality, and unlocks Auracast.

Auracast is a broadcast feature in Bluetooth LE Audio. A single Auracast transmitter broadcasts audio to unlimited receivers in range. Think airport gate announcements, gym TV audio, church sermons, museum tours, movie theater dialogue. The transmitter is one-way, so there is no pairing dance. Any Auracast receiver just tunes in.

Why does this matter for a Lafayette patient? Auracast infrastructure is rolling out now. Denver International, Chicago O Hare, and Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson airports have installed Auracast at gates. LinkedIn conference venues, gyms, and houses of worship are following. Over the next 2 to 4 years many public venues will add Auracast. Nexia patients will be able to walk into those venues and simply hear the announcement, sermon, or lecture streamed cleanly into their hearing aids without asking anyone for a listening loop or standing under a specific speaker.

The practical result in our fitting room today: Nexia patients get high-quality direct streaming right now, and they are future-proofed for the Auracast rollout without having to trade in their aids in three years. For patients who travel a lot, attend large events, or spend time in public venues, this is a real long-term value driver.

All Access Directionality: natural spatial hearing

Most flagship hearing aids in 2026 aggressively beam-form toward the front, cutting side and rear sound to help pull out speech from noise. That approach works for the "quiet restaurant with a talker in front of you" scenario. It works less well for real life, where sound comes from every direction and cues about who is behind you or beside you matter.

ReSound Nexia takes a different design philosophy called All Access Directionality. Instead of narrowing the microphone field aggressively, Nexia keeps a wider spatial awareness while still doing directional processing. The tradeoff is a small loss in extreme background-noise scenarios in exchange for a big gain in daily situational awareness.

In our fittings this shows up for a specific patient type. Drivers hear passengers and traffic without turning their heads. Active older patients hear grandchildren approaching from behind. Walkers and outdoor patients hear bicyclists coming up on them. Hunters hear game moving to the side rather than only what is directly in front. If you value knowing where sound is coming from as much as isolating what is being said, Nexia is often the right pick.

Form factors and specs

• Nexia RIE Rechargeable: receiver-in-ear rechargeable. Most-fitted at ACI. About 24 hrs per charge in typical use, about 12 hrs with heavy Bluetooth streaming. Case holds 3 charges.
• Nexia RIE 312: size 312 disposable battery variant for patients who prefer batteries over rechargeable. About 6-7 day battery life per size 312 cell.
• Nexia BTE PP: power behind-the-ear for moderately-severe to severe losses.
• Nexia Micro RIE Rechargeable: extra small housing for cosmetic-conscious patients.
• Streaming: Bluetooth LE Audio, Auracast, Made for iPhone (native iOS direct streaming), ASHA for Android (Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy).
• Water resistance: IP68 rated.
• Tinnitus: Tinnitus Sound Generator onboard with customizable sound profiles.
• App: ReSound Smart 3D (iOS and Android). Remote fine-tuning available.
• Fitting range: mild through severe. Profound loss (above 90 dB) requires ReSound Enzo Q power BTE.

Technology tiers

ReSound Nexia comes in four levels: 9, 7, 5, and 3. All four tiers support Bluetooth LE Audio, Auracast, Made for iPhone, and the ReSound Smart 3D app. The tier controls how many automatic environmental scenes the aid recognizes, how sophisticated the noise reduction is, and how customizable the directional processing gets.

At ACI Hearing Center we fit Nexia 9 to patients with complex listening lives (frequent travel, meetings, church, family gatherings, multiple environments in a day). We fit Nexia 5 to patients with more predictable environments where the incremental benefit of 9 does not justify the price difference. We rarely fit Nexia 3 because at that level several important environmental features are gone, and if the patient is that budget-constrained we typically steer them to a Signia or Unitron essential-tier device that offers better value in that price range.

Cost at ACI Hearing Center

Complete ReSound Nexia treatment plans at ACI Hearing Center range from $4,500 (Essential technology level, Nexia 3) to $7,500 (Premium technology level, Nexia 9) per pair. The Premium tier includes the full All Access Directionality feature set, all environmental scenes, and the most sophisticated noise reduction.

Every treatment plan at ACI includes:

• Fitting with real-ear measurement verification
• Follow-up adjustments for the life of the device (typically 4-6 years)
• Our standard 60-day trial period
• Manufacturer warranty (3 years on Nexia 9, 2 years on lower tiers)
• Loss and damage coverage during the warranty period

The 60-day trial

Every ReSound Nexia fitting at ACI Hearing Center comes with a 60-day trial. Here is what that actually looks like:

1. Fitting day. We program Nexia based on your audiogram, verify the fit with real-ear measurements (we do not skip this step), and send you home with the devices.
2. Week 1 follow-up. Come in or use the ReSound Smart 3D app for a remote adjustment. Most patients need one program tweak based on real-world use.
3. Week 3 follow-up. Fine-tune based on 3 weeks of daily use. Any listening situation that is not working, we address here.
4. Week 6 follow-up. Final fine-tune. This is when we check if Nexia is the right long-term device for you.
5. Day 60 decision. Keep, return, or exchange for a different platform.

Approximately 91 percent of our ReSound Nexia trials convert to a keep decision. The ones that do not typically exchange for Oticon Real (patients whose real-world listening turned out to be more restaurant-noise driven than travel-and-connectivity driven) or Phonak Sphere Infinio (patients who valued Roger microphone accessories or realized their listening life is more one-on-one quiet than they thought).

All three are current-generation flagships. All three are excellent. None is universally better. Here is how we walk patients through the decision at ACI:

We often fit patients who genuinely benefit from any of the three platforms. In those cases the 60-day trial is the deciding step, not the spec sheet. Some patients change their mind after the week 3 follow-up because the real-world data does not match the priority they thought mattered most.
