The short version

Starkey Genesis AI is one of our top-shelf flagship recommendations at ACI Hearing Center. For patients who want real technical differentiation, on-board health tracking, and industry-leading power in a discreet rechargeable housing, Genesis AI is often the best of the current-generation platforms.

Where Genesis AI wins in our fittings:

Where Genesis AI is not the best pick:

There is no single best hearing aid. There is the best hearing aid for you. That decision comes out of the fitting appointment and the 60-day trial, not a spec sheet comparison.

Under the hood: the on-chip Deep Neural Network

Starkey Genesis AI launched in February 2023 as the first hearing aid platform with a Deep Neural Network running directly on the chip. That sentence is easy to write and easy to skim past. It is also a genuine technical shift in how hearing aids process sound.

What the Deep Neural Network actually does. The Neuro Processor inside each Genesis AI hearing aid analyzes your sound environment about 80 million times per hour. It classifies the scene (quiet, restaurant, music, wind, speech in noise), predicts what you are trying to hear, and adjusts amplification and noise reduction accordingly. All of this happens on the chip inside the aid. No cloud server. No phone connection required. No lag.

Why on-chip AI matters. Cloud-based AI processing has real problems for hearing aids. Latency (any delay makes conversation feel weird), privacy (your acoustic environment being uploaded), reliability (spotty cell service equals broken hearing aids). On-chip processing avoids all three. The chip is doing the analysis in real time, in your ear, without needing anything else.

What this feels like in the fitting room. Patients describe Genesis AI as sounding "more natural" and "less digital" than their prior aids. In our real-ear measurement verification, Genesis AI holds its target gain more consistently across changing environments than most competitors. It does not overreact to a passing loud sound and it does not undercorrect for a quiet talker across the table.

Edge Mode+ and why patients actually use it

Most flagship hearing aids in 2026 have some version of an environmental "boost" mode. Most patients never use them. Starkey's approach is different, and it is one of the reasons Genesis AI has the highest 60-day trial keep rate in our practice.

How Edge Mode+ works. When you walk into a tough listening environment (loud restaurant, car with road noise, windy day at a football game, crowded gym) you double-tap your hearing aid or press a button in the My Starkey app. Genesis AI runs an on-demand AI analysis of that specific sound scene and reprograms itself in about a second for that exact environment. When you leave, tap again and it returns to normal.

Why patients use it. Edge Mode+ works. The reprogramming for the specific environment is meaningfully better than the automatic setting for that scene. Patients feel the difference within the first few uses and then reach for the tap gesture on their own. In our fitting-room satisfaction data, tap-to-boost is one of the top three most-loved features across the flagship tier.

The trade-off is that patients who do not want to interact with their hearing aids at all (they want to put them in and forget them) may be better served by Oticon Real, which is designed to handle most environments fully automatically without any user input.

On-board health tracking and fall alerts

Genesis AI includes a motion sensor and health tracking that most other flagship platforms either do not have or handle only through a paired phone. The health features are built into the hearing aid itself.

Who cares about this? Older patients living independently and their adult children. Fall alerts are a genuine peace-of-mind feature. Adult children of hearing aid patients tell us at follow-ups that the fall alert setup was the tipping point for their parent finally agreeing to try hearing aids at all.

Live Language Translation in the My Starkey app

The My Starkey app translates spoken language in real time between 52 languages. The other person speaks into your phone, the app translates, and the translated speech streams directly into your hearing aids as audio.

Where this actually helps Lafayette patients:

Real limitation: heavy background noise degrades accuracy. This is a quiet one-on-one and small-group tool, not a "translate the crowd" tool. But for what it does well, it is a legitimate conversational feature that no other flagship platform matches at this level.

Form factors and specs

Technology tiers

Starkey Genesis AI comes in four levels: 24, 20, 16, and 12. All four tiers include Made for iPhone streaming, ASHA for Android, the My Starkey app, and Edge Mode+. The tier controls how sophisticated the Deep Neural Network processing is, how many automatic environmental scenes the aid recognizes, and which health tracking features are available.

At ACI Hearing Center we fit Genesis AI 24 to patients with complex listening lives (frequent travel, multiple environments daily, family gatherings), patients who want the full health tracking feature set, and patients with severe-to-profound loss who need the industry-leading power range. We fit Genesis AI 20 to patients with more predictable environments where the incremental benefit of 24 does not justify the price difference. We rarely fit Genesis AI 12 because the entry tier is missing several features that make Genesis AI worth choosing over a mid-tier device from another manufacturer.

Cost at ACI Hearing Center

Complete Starkey Genesis AI treatment plans at ACI Hearing Center range from $4,500 (Essential technology level, Genesis AI 12) to $7,500 (Premium technology level, Genesis AI 24) per pair. The Premium tier includes the full Deep Neural Network feature set, all environmental scenes, Edge Mode+, and the complete health tracking suite.

Every treatment plan at ACI includes:

Financing is available through CareCredit and PowerPay. Payment plans typically run 12 to 60 months. See our financing options for details, or read our HSA and FSA guide if you have a health savings account you can use.

The 60-day trial

Every Starkey Genesis AI fitting at ACI Hearing Center comes with a 60-day trial. Here is what that actually looks like:

  1. Fitting day. We program Genesis AI based on your audiogram, verify the fit with real-ear measurements (we do not skip this step), set up the My Starkey app on your phone, walk you through Edge Mode+, and configure fall alert emergency contacts if you want that feature enabled.
  2. Week 1 follow-up. Come in or use the My Starkey app for a remote adjustment. Most patients need one program tweak based on real-world use.
  3. Week 3 follow-up. Fine-tune based on 3 weeks of daily use. This is when we check that Edge Mode+ is being used correctly and that the Live Language Translation setup is working for the patient's specific use case if they need it.
  4. Week 6 follow-up. Final fine-tune. This is when we check if Genesis AI is the right long-term device for you.
  5. Day 60 decision. Keep, return, or exchange for a different platform.

Approximately 93 percent of our Starkey Genesis AI trials convert to a keep decision (the highest keep rate in our flagship tier). The ones that do not typically exchange for Oticon Real (patients who found they did not want to interact with Edge Mode+ and preferred fully automatic operation) or ReSound Nexia (patients who realized Bluetooth LE Audio + Auracast future-readiness was more important to them than the on-chip AI story).

Genesis AI vs Oticon Real vs Phonak Sphere Infinio vs ReSound Nexia

All four are current-generation flagships. All four are excellent. None is universally better. Here is how we walk patients through the decision at ACI:

Listening priority Better pick
Fully automatic background noise handling (restaurant, family gatherings) Oticon Real
User-triggered boost for tough environments (Edge Mode+) Starkey Genesis AI
Cognitively-loaded quiet listening (therapy, courtroom, meetings) Phonak Sphere Infinio
Future-ready wireless (Bluetooth LE Audio, Auracast rollout today) ReSound Nexia
Fall alerts and on-board health tracking Starkey Genesis AI
Live language translation for conversations Starkey Genesis AI
Severe-to-profound loss in a rechargeable RIC (fits up to 105 dB) Starkey Genesis AI
Universal Bluetooth for iPhone + Android + laptops Phonak Sphere Infinio
Sound localization (spatial rendering) Oticon Real
All-around 360-degree spatial awareness (drivers, walkers) ReSound Nexia
Roger remote microphone ecosystem (classroom, church) Phonak Sphere Infinio

We often fit patients who genuinely benefit from any of the four platforms. In those cases the 60-day trial is the deciding step, not the spec sheet. Some patients change their mind after the week 3 follow-up because the real-world data does not match the priority they thought mattered most.
