Why Oticon still leads for natural listening

Oticon is one of the two largest hearing aid manufacturers in the world (owned by Demant, based in Denmark). What sets Oticon apart is a design philosophy called BrainHearing. Instead of aggressively suppressing background sound the way most competitors do, Oticon preserves the full 360-degree sound scene and lets the brain do the sorting work that it evolved to do.

This matters for most patients. When aggressive noise reduction removes background sound, it also removes cues the brain uses to locate speakers, track a conversation across a group, and keep listening effort low. Oticon calls this "open sound." Peer-reviewed research supports the approach for patients whose top complaint is comfortable speech understanding in restaurants, family dinners, and church.

The trade-off: for patients whose highest priority is the absolute cleanest speech in the loudest environments, a strongly-processed brand like Phonak Audeo Sphere Infinio may sound better in that one setting. We help you pick based on your daily life, not on marketing.

Oticon Real (adult, first-line)

Oticon Real is a receiver-in-canal device and our most-fit Oticon model. It is designed for the full range of adult hearing losses from mild through severe-to-profound. Available in both rechargeable (miniRITE R, about 18 hours per charge with streaming) and disposable-battery (miniRITE T) versions. Streams directly to iPhone via Made for iPhone and to compatible Android phones via ASHA plus the Oticon ON app. Hands-free calling works on both platforms.

What we like: RealSound Technology drops the noise floor without collapsing the sound scene, so patients tell us conversations "feel more natural" than aggressive competitors. What to know: the shell colors match hair tones well and the receiver wire is nearly invisible from most angles.

Oticon Xceed (severe to profound, super-power)

Oticon Xceed is a super-power behind-the-ear device and one of the strongest hearing aids on the market. It is our default recommendation for adults with severe to profound loss when a receiver-in-canal device does not have enough headroom. Xceed supports OpenSound Navigator plus a dedicated feedback-cancellation system that lets us push high-frequency gain without whistle. Available with rechargeable or disposable battery, custom earmolds standard.

What we like: for patients on the edge of cochlear implant candidacy, Xceed is often the last hearing aid we try before we discuss implant evaluation.

Oticon Play PX (pediatric)

Oticon Play PX is designed for children age 5 and up. It is the pediatric sibling of Oticon Real and shares the BrainHearing platform. Play PX supports remote-microphone systems for classroom use (Roger, EduMic), tamper-resistant battery doors, and durability features that matter for kids. We fit Play PX for pediatric patients across Louisiana Medicaid and private insurance.

What we like: kids get the same "natural" sound-scene benefit as adults, which matters because a child's brain is still building auditory maps and needs the full sound picture.

How an Oticon fit works at ACI

1. Full audiological workup. Air conduction, bone conduction, speech-in-noise, tympanometry, and if indicated, otoacoustic emissions. This tells us your loss shape and how much room there is for improvement with amplification.
2. Discussion and recommendation. We walk you through the top 2-3 brands that fit your audiogram, lifestyle, and budget. Oticon is often on that list, but not always. If a different brand fits better we say so.
3. Prescriptive fit with real-ear measurement. We do not just plug in the manufacturer's first-fit software. We use a probe microphone in your ear canal to measure the actual output at your eardrum and match it to a validated prescription (NAL-NL2 or DSL for kids). This is called real-ear measurement and it is the gold standard. Only about 30% of dispensers actually do it. Every ACI fit gets REM verification.
4. 45-day trial and follow-up fine-tuning. You wear the devices in your real life. We fine-tune based on what you notice. Included in the fee.
5. 3-year manufacturer warranty and 3-year loss-and-damage coverage on premium tiers.

Cost and financing

Oticon Real ranges from about $2,400 per pair (Essential tier) to $7,200 per pair (Premium tier) depending on technology level. Oticon Xceed and Play PX price similarly. All prices include real-ear measurement verification, follow-up fine-tuning through the trial period, and 3-year manufacturer warranty.
