Does the VA cover hearing aids?

Yes. Enrolled veterans get hearing aids at no cost through VA healthcare. Coverage includes the diagnostic hearing evaluation, the hearing aids themselves, fitting, follow-up adjustments, batteries and chargers, repairs, and replacements every 4 to 5 years. This is one of the most comprehensive hearing aid benefits available anywhere in U.S. healthcare.

Which hearing aid brands does the VA cover?

The VA formulary includes all 5 flagship manufacturers: Oticon, Phonak, ReSound, Starkey, and Signia. It also covers Sonic, Rexton, Widex, and Unitron. Selection is based on the veteran's hearing loss pattern, lifestyle, and audiologist recommendation. The VA does not carry every device model, but the flagship platforms are all available.

Can I use my own audiologist through the VA?

Yes, if you qualify for VA Community Care under the MISSION Act. Community Care allows veterans to see a private community provider when the VA cannot meet the 30-day or 30-minute standards, or when a VA clinician determines that community care is in the veteran's best medical interest. ACI Hearing Center accepts VA Community Care authorizations. Call the VA first to request the authorization, then call us to schedule.

How long does VA Community Care authorization take?

Typical range is 5 to 15 business days from the veteran's initial request to the VA. The VA reviews eligibility (MISSION Act criteria, medical necessity), issues a written authorization to the community provider, and notifies the veteran. Authorization is usually good for 6 months and covers a specific set of visits (evaluation, fitting, follow-up). If your authorization is delayed, call the VA Office of Community Care at your local facility.

What if I am not enrolled in VA healthcare yet?

You cannot use VA benefits until you enroll. Apply at va.gov/health-care/apply or call 1-877-222-8387. You will need your DD-214 (discharge paperwork) and Social Security number. Most honorably discharged veterans qualify. Enrollment is free. Once you are enrolled, you can request an audiology evaluation and start the process. If you served but never enrolled, do not assume you do not qualify. Apply first.

Are VA hearing aids replaced if they are lost or broken?

Yes. Repairs are covered for the life of the device. Standard replacements happen every 4 to 5 years or when the device is no longer serviceable. Lost or damaged devices are also replaced through the VA, though the veteran may need to submit a lost device report. If your VA-issued hearing aid stops working, call your VA audiology clinic or, if you received the device through Community Care, call the provider who fit you.

The short version

If you are an enrolled veteran, the VA pays for your hearing test, your hearing aids, batteries, repairs, and replacements. You pay nothing. You can get care in two ways:

Alexandria VA Health Care System (the primary VA facility for most Lafayette-area veterans, about 90 miles and 90 minutes north on I-49). Audiology services are provided directly by VA staff.
VA Community Care. If the VA cannot see you within the MISSION Act standards (30 days for a routine appointment or an average 30-minute drive time from your home), you may qualify for care at a private community provider. ACI Hearing Center in Lafayette accepts VA Community Care authorizations.

Both paths give you the same benefit. What differs is where you go and how long you wait.

Who qualifies

You qualify for VA hearing benefits if you are enrolled in VA healthcare. Enrollment is based on your service history and priority group assignment. The VA groups veterans into 8 priority groups based on factors like service-connected disability rating, income, and Purple Heart or Medal of Honor status.

Most honorably discharged veterans qualify for some level of enrollment. Some priority groups have small co-pays for certain services, but hearing aid coverage itself is comprehensive across all groups once you are enrolled. If you have never enrolled, apply at va.gov/health-care/apply or call 1-877-222-8387. You will need your DD-214 and Social Security number. Enrollment is free.

If you served in a combat zone, if you have a service-connected disability rating (any percentage), or if you are a former POW, Purple Heart recipient, or Medal of Honor recipient, you are almost certainly eligible. Do not assume you do not qualify. Apply first.

Path 1: Alexandria VA Health Care System

The Alexandria VA Health Care System is the primary VA facility for most veterans in the Acadiana region. It offers audiology services including diagnostic hearing evaluations, hearing aid fittings, and follow-up care.

Drive time from Lafayette: about 90 miles and 90 to 100 minutes north on I-49.

To use this path, call your primary care VA team and ask to be scheduled for a hearing evaluation. Wait times vary by season and by the audiology clinic's current backlog. If the wait exceeds the MISSION Act 30-day standard, you can request VA Community Care instead.

Some Lafayette-area veterans also use the Alexandria VA Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) at 2100 Jackson Street, Alexandria, LA. CBOCs generally do not have full audiology services, but they can begin the referral. Confirm with your VA team.

Path 2: VA Community Care through ACI Hearing Center

VA Community Care allows an enrolled veteran to receive care from a private community provider when specific criteria are met. This program was created under the VA MISSION Act of 2018 to reduce travel and wait times for veterans who cannot easily reach a VA facility.

When you qualify for Community Care

You qualify when at least one of these is true:

The VA cannot schedule you within 30 days of the clinically indicated date (or your preferred date, if later).
The average drive time from your home to the nearest VA facility offering the service exceeds 30 minutes for primary care and mental health, or 60 minutes for specialty care like audiology. For most Lafayette-area veterans, the drive to Alexandria exceeds this standard for audiology.
A VA clinician determines that community care is in your best medical interest.
The specific care you need is not offered at any VA facility within a reasonable distance.

How the authorization works

You start by calling the VA and requesting Community Care. Name ACI Hearing Center as your preferred community provider (address: 103 Saint Thomas Street, Lafayette, LA 70506; phone: 337-223-9448). The VA reviews your eligibility, confirms medical necessity, and issues a written authorization to ACI. You do not pay anything. The VA pays ACI directly for the covered services.

Typical timeline: 5 to 15 business days from your initial request to the authorization landing at ACI. The authorization is usually good for 6 months and covers a defined set of visits: evaluation, fitting, and follow-up. If the authorization expires or you need additional services beyond it, the VA can extend or reissue it.

What happens at your ACI appointment

Once the authorization is on file, we call you to schedule. Your first visit is a full diagnostic hearing evaluation. If you qualify for hearing aids based on the evaluation, we select devices from the VA formulary that fit your hearing loss pattern and your lifestyle. Fittings happen at a follow-up appointment. Adjustments continue over several weeks as your ears adapt to the devices.

Many veterans present with combined hearing loss and tinnitus, often connected to service-related noise exposure. Tinnitus is the number one service-connected disability among post-9/11 veterans.
