How loud is a firearm, really
Every time you pull a trigger without protection, you take a hit. Not "you might damage your hearing." A hit.
- .22 long rifle: 140 decibels at the muzzle. Above the pain threshold.
- 12-gauge shotgun: 155 decibels. Louder than a jet engine at 100 feet.
- .223 rifle: 165 decibels. Louder than a jackhammer at arm's length.
- Muzzleloader: 160 to 170 decibels depending on load.
Permanent hearing damage starts at 85 decibels with sustained exposure. NIOSH research shows a single unprotected gunshot can cause permanent hearing loss, especially at close range or inside a duck blind, deer stand, or indoor shooting range where the sound reflects and multiplies.
Louisiana hunters who came up hunting without protection almost always have measurable high-frequency hearing loss when they come in for a baseline test. Even hunters in their 30s show it. Even hunters who "hear fine" show it. The high frequencies go first, and speech clarity follows.
Custom electronic hearing protection: what it actually does
Modern electronic protection is not the bulky headset your grandad wore. Current custom in-ear models are the size of a small in-ear headphone and disappear under a baseball cap.
The device has two microphones on the outside of the housing. These microphones pick up environmental sound (footsteps, wind through cane, a bird call, a range officer's command) and pipe it into your ear at normal volume, or amplified up to 8x for hunters who want to hear more of what is happening around them.
When the microphones detect a sudden impulse above 85 decibels (a gunshot), the device clips the sound in under 2 milliseconds. That is faster than the sound reaches your eardrum. You hear a quiet "pop" instead of the actual gunshot. Between shots the amplification returns to normal, so you can still hear your hunting partner or your dog.
This is why hunters and shooters who use electronic protection often perform better in the field: they are not muffled by passive plugs, they can hear the game, and they are not flinching from unprotected shots.

Custom in-ear electronic protection
Custom molded to your ear canal. Best for serious hunters and shooters who use protection often. Brands we fit: SoundGear by Starkey, Etymotic GunSport Pro, Westone DefendEar, Eargo Shield. $1,200 to $2,800 per pair depending on features. 2 to 3 weeks from impression to delivery.
Passive custom-molded ear plugs
Custom fit, no electronics. All sound blocked equally, at a rated 25 to 32 decibel noise reduction. Best for shooters who do not need to hear environmental sound (target shooting, range work, indoor range only). $250 to $450 per pair. About 2 weeks from impression to delivery.
Over-ear electronic muffs
Same electronic amplify-and-clip technology, in a headset form factor. In stock at our office and dispensed same-day. Best for youth hunters, casual shooters, or as a backup for your custom set. $150 to $400. Note: over-ear muffs interfere with cheek weld on long guns, so serious rifle hunters usually prefer in-ear custom.
Hearing aid and shooter combo
If you already qualify for hearing aids, some models combine everyday hearing aid amplification with impulse-noise clipping so you get both functions in one device. Youth hunters: the seal matters
Adult over-ear muffs do not seal on smaller heads. The gaps under and behind the muff let damaging sound through. If your child is starting to hunt (dove opens Sept 1, teal Sept 12, archery deer Oct 1), do not send them out in dad's headset. Book them a youth-fit appointment and we will make sure the protection actually works.
For ages 6 to 14, we fit youth-sized electronic muffs designed for smaller heads. For teens 15 and up, adult muffs usually fit but we check the seal. Custom in-ear protection is an option once the ear canal stops growing (usually age 13 to 15).

Custom electronic in-ear protection takes 2 to 3 weeks from impression to delivery. If you want it in your ear before September 1, come in for impressions by August 15. If you want it before archery deer opens October 1, come in by September 15.
